When Pop Culture Turned on Women: Sophie Gilbert & Pandora Sykes

When Pop Culture Turned on Women: Sophie Gilbert & Pandora Sykes
8:00pm, Tuesday 8th of July, Magic Circle Theatre Euston
What happened to feminism in the 21st century and how did a movement built on empowerment get repackaged into something glossy, commercial, and utterly hollow?
In this live conversation, acclaimed cultural critic Sophie Gilbert joins journalist and broadcaster Pandora Sykes to explore a pivotal shift in pop culture: the moment when the riot grrrl rage and third-wave feminism of the '90s gave way to a new era of hyper-sexualization, tabloid cruelty, and girl power with a commercial sheen. It was an era of low-rise jeans, reality TV humiliation, paparazzi pile-ons, and the rise of internet porn, all wrapped in the language of empowerment, but delivering something far more toxic.
Together, Gilbert and Sykes will trace how the early 2000s shaped a generation of women, how nostalgia often hides misogyny in plain sight, and why the cultural narratives of that time still echo - on our screens, in our politics, and in the expectations women face today.
Expect a conversation that’s sharp, uncompromising, and deeply relevant - an unflinching look at the media forces that defined girlhood.
