Nothing says summer like the bubonic plague! The rats are sunning themselves and the fleas are multiplying like it’s the sexy summer of 1665. Who needs a tan and weight-watchers when you have boils and diarrhoea?
If that sentence made you queasy, then this might not be the night for you - because this evening will be a whistle stop journey through the six diseases that changed our species forever!
Acclaimed historian and writer Edna Bonhomme will join us at The Trouble Club to share the global histories of bubonic plague, cholera, smallpox, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and COVID-19, revealing how each reshaped borders, bodies, and belief systems.
We will explore how illness isn’t just a biological event, but a mirror reflecting centuries of inequality, survival, and transformation. From colonial conquest to climate crisis, this is a conversation about who gets to heal, who is left behind and why.
A must-attend for history lovers (and those with a strong stomach).
