Kit de Waal on Common People: Working class voices in literature.

Is literary fiction too middle class? Possibly. But that’s not to say there isn’t some great working class literature that opens our eyes. Award-winning novelist Kit de Waal has been knocking out bestsellers - her first novel, My Name is Leon won the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year in 2017, and her second, The Trick to Time was longlisted for The Women's Prize. While knocking out her bestsellers, Kit has also been a vocal advocate for working class writers. She has just crowdfunded an anthology of working class writing called Common People (sorry Jarvis!). Some names you will be familiar with - Louise Doughty, the author behind Apple Tree Yard and Malorie Blackman, author of The Norts and Crosses series.

This evening we are going to be talking about voice, class and privilege with Kit de Waal and some of her writers.
